There is a little known school in Jurong East, Singapore that is making big waves in the world of education and it's all thanks to their students, parents and a partnership between two unlikely yet game-changing business models.
When a typical parent confidently walks through the doors of I Know English, they are greeted heartily and inquisitively by the front desk staff. Then, with a bit of encouragement, their child takes an assessment. From that point, parents unknowingly have begun a life changing experience; not only for themselves and their child, but for the world! What parents often don't know is that when they quickly sign up and make their first payment, they are also providing a ray of hope to students in countries where the dream of being able to study in the evening was not even a possibility. How it works: In conjunction with Power a Life: a social-enterprise focused on technology based in Glasgow, Scotland, I Know English and their patrons are transforming the world by providing students in the poorest countries around the world with solar lamps to help them continue studying into the night. Each term a parent makes a school fees payment, a portion of that fee is passed on to Power a Life to fund the purchase of solar lamps, at cost. The school's director, Maximus Freeman Han, says the aim is not to only help students continue to be able to study but also to improve literacy rates in countries that need it most. "The solar lamps are just the beginning. We will also be bringing our revolutionary reading system to those who need it most." - Maximus Han Power a Life's co-founder, Jeremie Warner, says he is pleased with the new partnership and sees great potential for more ways to cooperate. "Our partnership can really affect positive change around the world. We're very excited to have I Know English on board with us." - Jeremie Warner Currently, the partnership assists countries throughout Africa where nearly 1 billion people are without stable electricity or no electricity at all. With companies like I Know English and Power a Life, they very well may change the world. Find out more about Power a Life. Find out more about I Know English. |
