Some days I ask myself why I keep teaching. What is the point of all the assessments and record keeping? I'm not saying that these are not important aspects of education (whatever that means), but I'm wondering where is the love? How come a child's emotional well-being isn't taken into more consideration when parents are searching for the best education? These are the questions that swirl around my mind on a daily basis. I want my students to feel good about who they are and what they are doing. The improved test scores are secondary. One comment I continuously have been told while delivering the I Know English Programme is that "My kid actually loves coming to class! And they only want to do your homework!". Or, "My child is so excited to come to your class each week!". Each time these parents see progress I repeat to them that it's because happiness, caring and kindness come before anything else. And there is plenty of science to show that kids who are happy learn better.* Further, what is the point of life? To have a miserable time only studying and go to work possibly doing something you don't enjoy? Well, I am looking out for the well-being of my students, and I want them to be healthy and happy. I want them to cultivate positive relationships and have a sense of appreciation and love toward their neighbours. I'm sure we could all use a world filled with more loving and caring people. I guess my point is that I would encourage all parents to look for places that provide the best balance between emotional well-being and academic progress. They say life is short. Better to live a short happy life than a long miserable one. With Love, Teacher Thomas *http://www.ronitbaras.com/family-matters/parenting-family/happy-kids-learn-better/ |
