If phonics are the first things you think of when your child is learning to read, it is highly likely that you were taught phonics before learning about phonology or learned about the phonology without even being aware of it.
Phonology: the study of sounds used for creating words. This is actually one of the areas of literacy development that is proven to determine future reading success*. Many parents may think of this aspect of learning to read as difficult to understand. But once you give it more consideration, you can really understand its importance. The best way to do this is to think about how a baby learns to speak. They first begin by listening. Then imitating their exemplar. The next step in this development would be for them to begin to understand that their mouth is what makes those sounds. At first, children do not think of their words as being sounds made by their mouth. They are just words they say to get what they want or need. But once they begin to understand that their mouth; teeth, tongue, lips and throat are what make these sounds, they begin to become aware of the fact that the words are made of these different oralcies. |
