1. They are only practicing skills-based activities. Language is affected and interpreted by the social part of our brain. For these reasons, students need real interactions with language in a way that relates to them through activities they enjoy. This includes playing games, singing songs and hearing rich text matched with imagery and great questioning. 2. They aren't being taught respectful communication. For students to have optimal learning experiences they need to be receptive to the instructions given by the teacher. If they are not being taught how to effectively communicate: taking turns listening, learning how to get attention through non-disruptive means and learning how to use vocabulary effectively to express their needs, thoughts and concerns. 3. Too much instruction and not enough exploration. Often teachers can get caught up in giving endless instruction and sharing that they forget that students need to explore language/vocabulary that they have learned. This does not mean that students need to reread and rewrite the same text over and over. Nor does it mean they have to memorise it. They need the opportunity to use it in a natural setting; that often means at play! So, having a balance between instruction and exploration is crucial to help students utilise their new found language skills. 4. Teachers aren't getting down to the students' level. Students respond well to authority. But that authority should be earned through mutual respect! Teachers should be willing to participate in students' play and be willing to lead the students in how to play respectfully and appropriately. When teachers demand authority and respect, it is demonstrating to students how they should obtain respect and give it. The teacher who earns respect has far less work to do managing their class and so has more time to focus on students reaching their full potential. Conclusion If your child is experiencing any of these situations, perhaps it's time to give another centre a try. It may be difficult to separate from a beloved brand but it's always important to provide the best solutions to our children's education. Happy hunting. |
