Perhaps your child is struggling with reading and you don't know why? We're here to give you some early warning signs by sharing what good readers do. If your child doesn't do these things it's probably something you should consider working on.
1. Good Readers get Read to Daily It doesn't take a genius to figure out that parents who read to their children produce better readers. But it makes total sense; if you see how someone does something you are going to recognise the patterns of pace, tone, rhythm and expression in reading. 2. They Use Phonics and Other Visual Cues to Read Great readers use as much information from the page as they possibly can to help them make sense of the text they are reading to make reading easier. As well, they utilise phonics and blending rather than guessing how to read the words. 3. They Reread After They've Decoded a Hard Word Great readers use phonics and decoding skills to read out new and challenging words. After they decode the word, they reread the sentence again to get a better understanding of the sentence. Readers who are just decoding and not rereading often miss out on meaning of the story and feel bored because they don't understand. Conclusion It can seem difficult to find time to read to your little one(s) every day but in fact it only takes 5 to 10 minutes of your time. Turn off the smartphone, tablet or computer and make time for them. You are the person they look up to. Give them the honour of listening to you read to them and they will soon be following the rules of good reading as well. |
