How do we know what is best for our children? It is a daunting question to try to answer, isn't it? Are the skills of today preparing us for the world of tomorrow? All parents should be asking themselves these questions.
The truth is that there is no answer that is 100% correct; and it is very unlikely that there ever will be. Yet, with that said, there is a lot of research that would suggest there are some fundamental skills that can improve a child's ability to think and make more rational, reasonable decisions. Does that mean a child will grow up to make the "right" decisions for themselves all the time: certainly not. The power of a positive attitude and the ability to persevere may be more valuable to a child's success in later life than any other factors (perseverance). In relation to a child's studies, it means that the child either defeats their self before they have even started or give up the minute they face a challenge. By contrast the students who persevere and acknowledge their challenge empowers themselves. I Know English teaches children to be part of a positive community of learners, motivates students to be supportive of each other to accomplish their goals, and persevere. Not only that, it also encourages students to use their thinking skills to analyse and understand the challenge so that they can overcome it. In the I Know Phonics course students use clearly set goals and are given strategies to solve those problems. Teachers assist only to reestablish the goal and strategies and then encourage students to face the challenge independently. By emulating the thinking skills and behaviours we aim to teach the students, we prepare them for the challenges and strategies for tackling them.
